Changes to note in our new population mobility dataset: Version 3.0
Release date: 25 November 2024
We have made substantial changes to the statistics provided on our Haiti Mobility Data Platform following methodology changes.
This release note explains the changes between this new dataset and the one previously hosted on the platform. This results in some big changes in both overall estimated mobility and the number of communal sections and months that we can provide data for.
Key take-aways:
- V3.0 is a complete revision of our estimates from January 2020 following methodology changes
- These changes correct from previously underestimated mobility: data now show larger mobility estimates overall (and larger changes in population estimates over time).
Corrections:
- Refinement of our weighting methodology and redaction rules:
- Update of (weighting) parameters from additional survey data (the phone survey we conducted in 2023 and the MSNA survey conducted in 2024), in addition to further parameters related to the monthly number of available CDR records
- Better coverage: estimates for more communal sections and months are now available (see below).
Reminder: Residents & Relocations categories
- Scaled and corrected to be representative of the whole population and to reduce the influence of phone usage behaviour
- Unadjusted for population change due to births, deaths, immigration and emigration: this version does not include a population change rate) (as with v2.2). This is because no data on this is available after 2018, and as a result, it does not reflect the current situation.
Differences between v2.2 and v3.0
- Changes to our methods have resulted in changes in mobility estimates. Revisions have led to a new estimation of the number of people who have left the ZMPAP between 2021 and 2024: we estimated a decrease of 80,000 people in our v2.2 estimates, while in our v3.0 dataset, we now estimate a decrease of 170,000 people. This is due to the change in methodology and new data from the phone survey.
- We are now providing estimates for more communal sections and more months, by now basing our redaction rules on population coverage, compared to our previous dataset (version 2.2). This additional data come with their own outliers and gaps in time series for the additional sections, which are captured in our Outliers and missing data [excel] workbook, available in the ‘About’ menu on the platform.
